A Quick Guide to Grazing Terminology

agriwebb case study - Justin Dow rafter JM cattle company

At AgriWebb we’re committed to driving sustainable farming practices. Effective grazing management lies at the heart of successful livestock management, and this means you need to be managing your pastures with the same focus as you manage your livestock. With the recent launch of our grazing planning tools, we’ve taken a big step forward in supporting farmers to make more informed sustainable, data-driven decisions for their land and livestock.

This blog aims to breakdown some of the grazing terminology and features within AgriWebb, helping you to better understand the tools available to you, so you can maximise your farm’s potential.

Understanding Grazing Terminology

There is a lot of terminology surrounding grazing and pasture management, so it is important to get familiar with it so you can make the most of your asset.

At AgriWebb, we focus on two key measurements when it comes to measuring feed: total standing dry matter (TDSM), and feed on offer (FOO).

  • TDSM refers to the total amount of dry material there is in a paddock, this may be automatically imported through a CiboLabs Pasture Key integration or manually entered through sample testing with a yardstick.
  • From there, we calculate FOO (we measure FOO in kilograms of dry matter per hectare) – the volume of feed that is actually edible for your livestock. FOO takes into consideration things like utilisation, target residual and wastage.

The FOO value can give valuable insight into how the paddock is performing and how long it can be grazed under different stocking rates. As stocking rate fluctuates, AgriWebb will automatically calculate how many grazing days are remaining for that paddock. Target residual is also an important measurement to be aware of. It will help you ensure you are leaving enough ground cover so you don’t overgraze your paddocks. Through detailed reports like the paddock grazing intensity report and DSE load by paddock report, you will get strong recommendations as to how best manage each paddock – whether that is adjusting stocking rate, increasing rotations, or improving soil health or pasture mix.

Grazing in AgriWebb

Our brand new grazing chart and rotational planner add-on allows you to plan and visualise your rotations on the farm map.

When you also integrate with tools like CiboLabs PastureKey, you’ll get up-to-date information on the total standing dry matter in each paddock, giving you real-time insights into how your pastures are handling current stocking rates. With this data feeding into AgriWebb’s reports, you can confidently adjust grazing intensity or plan rotations that prioritise both productivity and sustainability.

Make Smarter Grazing Decisions Today

Managing your grazing system can be a complex and time consuming task, but making use of the data you are already tracking in AgriWebb is the simplest way to make sure your current system is achieving the best results for your land, and ensuring your margins are the best they can possibly be.
